Teaser:

The single, most basic difference between an ineffective group interaction and a highly productive one lies in the existence of a single component—the role of the Synergist, says Les McKeown, author of “The Synergist.” Introducing the Synergist role to your people interactions, he says, blows past the lengthy and complex list of all possible symptoms of team and group dysfunction, and instead concentrates on just one thing: the single root cause of team and group dysfunction.

	By Les McKeown

If you’re involved with any group of people who are trying to achieve common goals—whether by leading a Fortune 500 company or volunteering part-time at a kid’s soccer league—you soon become acutely aware that those goals will be achieved only through the work of the people in the group.

Put simply, organizations don’t succeed in and of themselves—they succeed only through individuals, working in groups and teams.

Some fundamental shifts are occurring in the workplace. It appears little has changed, as those employees who have kept their jobs hunker down, try not to get noticed, and wait things out, But,in fact, the workplace continues to evolve. New trends are emerging, and some old ones are coming back, too.

Objectively assessing potential and identifying an individual’s ability to succeed when faced with future challenges is difficult for many companies. But identifying employees who have the right characteristics and attributes—and specifically agility in learning, adapting to changing situations, understanding the business models, and building networks of useful contacts—should be part of every organization’s plan and will contribute to a high-performance organization.

When the economy is in turmoil, it’s important to retain talented individuals to maintain business momentum and survive through the tough times. Coming out of a recession, it’s even more essential to have skilled talent in the right job to support growth.

One of the standard creativity techniques is “reversal.” This is where you take some established idea, suggest the exact opposite, and then see what the potential benefits might be. It’s exactly what educators are doing with one of the most fundamental assumptions of classroom teaching.

More than one of every three HR managers (37.9 percent) named Sales as the department most in need of training, based on a global talent management survey by NorthgateArinso.Training correlates to several key outcomes, based on AchieveGlobal research. Moderate to substantial coaching and training tends be related to higher deal sizes, greater increases in personal sales revenue, and generally more overall success compared with those receiving minimal coaching and training.

	By Sharon Daniels, CEO, AchieveGlobal

Ultimately, all companies are in the business of sales. While goods and services vary from brand to brand, a company’s lifeblood is in the revenue generated from sales. That’s why it’s critical to consider what comprises an organization’s sales DNA—ranging from the talent of individual salespeople, to strength within the leadership ranks, to organizational structure.

Thanks to Brenda Quinney (Sales Training Manager at RSA) for this thought-provoking question, and to our LinkedIn Group members for their insightful answers.

Q: How do you measure the success of your elearning program? Do you survey your learners? What questions do you ask?

More than 70 percent of respondents to an anonymous online survey claimed to have a good working relationship with their boss. Respondents also overwhelmingly identified a few key traits that set good managers apart from bad.

The gift of great leadership can seem magical. The underlying theory is not. The key is to focus on mindful leadership development. To be intentional about process, content, and outcomes—to take leaders on a deeply personal journey that starts with a courageous look inside to reflect on their humanity and a fresh look outside to connect with other leaders to solve thorny and complex organizational problems.

By Rosaria Hawkins, PhD, and Filomena Warihay, Ph.D.

Leadership training is no small investment. The Leadership Development Fact Book reports an average annual expenditure of $500,000 per company on leadership development activities. The annual per participant cost of leadership training runs between $2,000 and $ 7,500 per person. For large corporations, that amounts to millions of dollars.

Applying game sciences to recognition and performance improvement programs is much more than just creating a game. It’s essentially a way of creating a series of interlocking and customizable experiences that enrich a relationship with a brand or company. Gamification is about finding new ways to appeal to the basic human drives that motivate us every day.

By Jerry Klein, Senior Solution Design Strategist, Maritz Motivation Solutions

We live in a world increasingly obsessed with games. From celebrity athletes performing before worshipful throngs to teenage boys lost in World of Warcraft, games engage and delight all ages. Businesses can capitalize on this trend toward play. Applying the mechanics of gaming to non-game activities can help to engage people in new and exciting ways.
